Blue dot is a free GPL licensed Perl CGI tracking and web site activity measurement script which generates Apache combined style access log files. These log files can be analyzed with most standard log analysis tools like Analog and Relax to track site's popularity, referrers, hosts, etc.
The logging is based on inserting a small piece of JavaScript or SSI code into web page, link or button. This code requests a very small blue dot image (like here "") from a server where the call is logged. Somewhat more limited entry is logged even if the visitor has disabled JavaScript from the browser. It is very easy to generate and modify these code snippets with the Blue dot Code Generator.
Blue dot can also be configured to set and log session and persistent cookies. This can be used, for example, to track pay-per-click search engine ROI. Dotlog Analysis Tools is a set of Perl scripts designed to dig out information from the cookie data.
A web server with the ability to run custom Perl CGI scripts. This can be your own ISP, or a free hosting service with CGI privileges. Please note! Your pages and Blue dot can be on different servers.
The Blue dot announcement list is for announcements regarding new versions, bugs, etc. You are expected to receive just a few messages per year from this list. To subscribe, send a blank email message to <bluedot_announce-subscribe@yahoogroups.com>.
